05 — Traditional Wood Firing

Each work is wood fired by an experienced kiln team in Jingdezhen using traditional high-temperature firing methods.

Natural flame, ash, heat, and kiln atmosphere interact with every piece uniquely, creating organic surfaces, ash deposits, and one-of-a-kind textures that cannot be replicated.

Due to the unpredictable nature of wood firing, variations, warping, or surface changes may occur as part of the natural firing process.

03 | Inspection & Approval

Each piece will be carefully reviewed before firing.

Works suitable for traditional wood firing will proceed to Jingdezhen, China for firing.

Natural ash effects, flame markings, and kiln atmosphere create one-of-a-kind surfaces shaped by fire, wood ash, and time.

06 — Return to Canada

After firing is completed, all works will be carefully returned to Canada through Hei Pottery.

Artists will be notified once the works arrive and are ready for pickup or arranged shipping.

Our Story

Wood Fired Ceramics Co. was created from a simple idea — to make traditional wood firing more accessible to ceramic artists and makers in Canada.

For a long time, we wanted to experience authentic wood firing ourselves, but many opportunities were difficult to access, limited, or very expensive. Often, artists only wanted to fire a few personal pieces, yet there were very few ways to experience traditional wood firing on a smaller scale.

Through this journey, we were fortunate to meet an experienced kiln master in Jingdezhen, China, a city with a long history of ceramic craftsmanship and traditional firing techniques. After many conversations and collaborations, we decided to build a bridge between Canadian ceramic artists and this rare firing experience.

Today, we help artists submit their handmade ceramic works for traditional wood firing, allowing each piece to develop natural ash surfaces, flame markings, and unique textures shaped by fire, wood ash, and time.

Every firing is unpredictable, and every piece becomes one of a kind. Our goal is simple: to give more ceramic artists the opportunity to experience the beauty of authentic wood firing.
